How To Pass a Drug and Alcohol Evaluation For Dummies
The majority of you who are sure you do not have a drinking problem would walk into a drug and alcohol evaluation confident that your honesty would yield a passing result. After revealing to the counselor that you only have a few beers after work or only drink with friends on the weekend or have a glass of red wine with dinner every night (which has even been proved to be medicinal to the health) you are confident that you will be declared to have zero drug or alcohol problems .The disappointing part would be at the end of the test when the counselor tells you his recommendation is intensive outpatient treatment and that he has found you to have an alcohol abuse problem. Stunned and a little enraged you have no idea how he or she came to that conclusion. Even worse is that the results will be seen by most likely by the courts (if court ordered) and the consequences could result in months of your life being devoted towards expensive time consuming drug and alcohol classes that you don't feel you deserve.
Now here is what you need to know to avoid a failing score:(oh and feel free to play some of my favorite songs with my play-list over here, it isn't spam or a link or anything just some cool beats that might make the read a bit more interesting -->)
Four things you need to know before taking the test.
First, is presentation of yourself. I would advise you not to walk in there like a nun, If your there for a DUI or MIP you've obviously not had enough self control to avoid that. Proclaiming that you never drink nor do drugs for no particular reason will cause suspicion, and will be taken into consideration by the counselor. At the same time you need to appear like a law abiding citizen to the counselor (it will make you more believable). The counselor will be less likely to believe anything you say if you’re rocking a Bob Marley shirt and sportin dreadlocks along w/ facial piercings, even if you are being 100% honest about never having tried pot, so dress for church with grandma. Another important factor is attitude; drugs make people agitated, lazy, hyper, nervous, depressed etc...Do NOT show any of these traits. Try to maintain a positively upbeat attitude with all the necessary manners on the side. Be sure to show concern about whatever you were arrested for and make a point that you have made a change for the better because of it, don't act like it doesn't bother you.
Second, as hard as it may be for your conscience, you have to throw honesty out the door, you do not get bonus points for honest. When the evaluation is over, the counselor wont be the one to fully decide whether or not you passed....The checklist that he’s been scoring on will tell him if you've passed or not. This is not a mental battle vs. the counselor, this is a battle between you and the evaluation test. Do not worry the counselor will not call you out on what you tell him, they do not have any information about you other than your driving record and arrest report. It all comes down to what you look like on paper at the end of the test, and what your score turns out to be will determine the consequences. It doesn't care what your opinion is regarding what is alcohol abuse is and neither does the counselor. So for all you rebels of the system (stick it to the man) keep your stubbornness in a box under the bed at home because it will won’t help you.
Third, do your research. These tests are designed to trip you up on your own answers. The evaluation contains a series of questions, some very similar to each other but worded differently to see if your answering consistently. If your under 21 and say you "only" drink in Canada with your friends, have dates in mind (never admit to having used alcohol or drugs after the arrest unless you got arrested again of course). When asked how much drug of choice you use, have an low amount in mind and stick to it. Practice your answers before hand, don't walk in there and wing it. Google "Michigan Alcohol Assessment Test" and go over the questions and even though it may not contain all the evaluation questions it encompasses the general idea,so get used to answering them all in your favor even despite if a couple may be true about you.
Fourth, Show up with clean pee. Don't be stupid, to pass the actual test with my advice only to fail a UA it would be a waste of time and confirm only that you are a liar to the counselor. This is a good site to check how long any drug will stay in your system www.alwaystestclean.com/how_long.htm
Answering evaluation questions
They will ask you if you've ever had a drug and alcohol evaluation before, so unless you've had one for court before say NO, there is no database they can look at that says your parents made you get a drug and alcohol evaluation back in high school. The next thing to remember when answering the questions is that you are new to alcohol or whatever you poison got you to this point. Whatever you got arrested for was a rare freak event that you've never done before. If you were arrested for DUI that's the first and last time you ever drove drunk, if you got an MIP that's the first and last time you ever had it on you. Do not admit to doing the illegal regularly, if you admit to breaking the law multiple times you will lose your law abiding image you are shooting for. If your under 21 and older than 19 say you only drink in Canada legally. Another thing is most times newbie’s to drugs and alcohols are provided the product at first; a big indicator of abuse is you spend a lot of your time focused on getting the product. So make a point that it was provided to you and that you absolutely did not go out of your way to get the alcohol or drug (especially if you’re underage or if it was a drug related charge).
The next thing to remember is they're looking to see if you've built up a tolerance .Does it take more alcohol or drugs to get you drunk or high now than when you first started to use. Now is not the time to brag about how you drank a whole fifth to yourself that one time or smoked the half ounce blunt for your birthday. If your there for an alcohol charge, say you get drunk off three beers and get sick in the morning as a hangover and that's never changed since you started drinking (chronic drinkers do not get sick after drinking and need a hell of a lot more than three beers to get drunk). For drugs say you only need a single hit to get you high as a kite. Never ever ever ever answer yes when they ask if you drink or do drugs before noon!
Now to answer the family related questions. Alcohol and drug abuse affects your family life; the evaluation is looking for this. You need to start by answering that no one in your family has had a drug or alcohol problem. Also state that your household is a supportive for your staying sober. Any history of family drug or alcohol abuse will negatively affect your scores. Then move on to say that your family life is great and that in no way has alcohol or drugs had a negative impact on your life. You also need to make it clear that you do not need drugs or alcohol to be social and make friends or go to work, also you do not need to drink or do drugs to "act normal”.
You also must show that you have a reason to refrain from using alcohol and drugs. Make a point that you have a very active life, sports, girlfriend, clubs, work, kids are all very good distractions from drugs or alcohol. You are less likely to be a repeat offender if you have something to stay sober for.
The End. I decided to write this post after I was trying to research up on how to pass a drug and alcohol evaluation for my very own legal troubles and came across a large amount of misinformation and hater posts critisizing people asking for help on the subject, and also there was a straight up lack of general information. If you follow my advice it will vastly increase your chance of passing a drug and alcohol evaluation( thanks to a couple of zero tolerance parents while in high school and one recent DUI I've been able to test it personally with passing results on multiple occasions,). If you have any questions or comments feel free to ask and I will answer them to the best of my knowledge. Although If you don't have anything nice to say , DON'T say it, I will ignore you.
Thank you for this posting! I had to do this for legal reasons and I was petrified about the whole thing thinking they just want my money and their monthly fees added up to close to a hundred bucks a month which in these times . . . .
ReplyDeleteI went in with a cheerful attitude, stuck to the story as close to the truth as possible without making myself sound to saintly or an alcoholic. I answered their questions accordingly and I studied the MAST test. It wasn't the exact test but it was close enough.
Thank you!! I went in palms sweating and heart racing but walked out without having to devote 3 days a week and loss of work and wages thanks to you.
Same here- I owe you in a huge way. Tons of Wisdom in your article. Thank You VERY much.
DeleteI have a assessment tomorrow and i already made the mistake saying i put my self in outpatient 3 years ago. When i was going through a lot. And im on my 3rd dwi.so what do i do now to pass.
Deletei went in to one and passed and they said i passed but since it was a drug case i still have to go to treatment?? Mind you this was my first offense. Should i get a attorney?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI got to go in on Feb. 27th, 2012; tell you how that works out
ReplyDeleteWhat if you had a drug assessment in the past? I took the test in the past and the plan was for me to take intensive outpatient classes... When they finally got my drug test back they realized I had a beer and signed me up for 6 months of residential in which I completed... This time I been clean for 4 months and I have a drug assessment coming up soon... I wasn't a regular user I only used when I went to my friend house one or two weekends out the month... I'm hoping that i will walk away with outpatient treatment... What are my chances? I am not a regular user I do not smoke daily... I can go weeks without thinking about smoking marijuana... That's my drug of choice... Can u help?
ReplyDeleteerndogg hi thanks for posting this. ok i had an assessment in the past like 3year's ago are they going to have my record of that ? this time i did nothing wrong child service's wants me to take this assessment i think its bs .im not sure if i should bring up my past drug use are not .ty
ReplyDeletedid you get an answer about having an evaluation 3 years ago?
DeleteI have to have a elva for a 5 degree assault.. I went to treatment when I was 16 bc of some minors I had and my mom and the court decided that would be best... Should I tell them about going to treatment? Could thy find out?
ReplyDeleteNo. Play like an angel. No problems ever
DeleteThis was some very valuable information. The eval is also comprised of mental and psycological questions, family history with chemical dependency and more.
ReplyDeleteI went in recently after having blown more than a .230 and came away with only an 8hr class to take and no further classes or treatment. Something to keep in mind is your blood alcohol level at the time you were tested...if awfully high at that time you need to say it was consumed quickly in a short period of time. I thank you for your article....good info!!
Thank you I go Tuesday!!
ReplyDeleteThank-you very much!!! This was so helpful.. My appointment is today..
ReplyDeletethanks for the info. I have appointment tommorrow I am gonna say not applicabe to all or no. let you know the after visit result thanks again
ReplyDeleteMy name is Dustin Long and I am a Registered Addiction Specialist and also the CEO of
ReplyDeleteArcadia Recovery Center. There are a couple points of emphasis that I would counsel those reading this to observe, the first of which is although I am a clean cut person, presentable and speak well, there is a core fundamental misinterpretation. I myself am a recovering addict and alcoholic and have close to 15 years experience. I appreciate the candor of the author of this posting, however I will add that if you think you can walk into an office with someone irregardless of whether they've been there or not with over 8 years of applied knowledge and think they won't call you out on truth or fiction is a fairy tale.
The second point I would like to bring up is the fact that the assessment tool is not designed to "trip" you up. I have been incarcerated I was a junkie for a decade of my life and I know have the opportunity to sit down with young men and women and assess whether or not they are chemically dependent or chemical abusers. The point I'm trying to make is that no counselor is "out to get you" nor do you want people in treatment who are not ready for an intensive level of care they do not belong in. The fact a treatment center waited to get back a UA to decide whether or not a client was in need of a higher level of care is actually unethical and impractical to ASAM and SAMSHA standards.
What I'm trying to get at in all of this is there is no certain way to "beat" a drug and alcohol evaluation, one because every counselor is different and two because every person is different. My best suggestion because this is what I look for HONESTY. If you come in and tell me that you don't have a drinking problem, no one in your family has ever had a drinking problem, this is your first DUI and you have no run in's with the law outside of it, you have held down a job for over a year and you pay your bills on time the last thing I'm going to do as a counselor is recommend any type of treatment because treatment would insinuate that you are DEPENDENT. The point of an assessment is to gauge whether or not you are DEPENDENT or an ABUSER. Nothing else…
i am glad you posted that comment because i too was a junkie but have been clean for almost 3 years, however i had a legal situation over 8 months ago with a dr, i am not guilty and have been fighting it til im just tired of fighting they have offered me a plea and to be honest id rather just take it and go on with my life, i have no problem admitting i was an addict but i also don't want people to think i am now because it does bother me i have came so far from where i was and of course my friends and family know this and that should be all that matters but to me if a counselor or court think im still in that addictive behavior yes it does bother me because i know better. Regardless i now have to take another a & d assessment to decide if "they" think i need inpatient rehab or outpatient or mental health or nothing i suppose, i told them i have no problem what so ever doing mental health, addicted or not anyone can use that, (please know once an addict your always an addict but the behavior changes and your always in recovery) i have 2 very small children and i have no one and i honestly mean no one to care for them if i had to go to a unneeded long term rehab ( i think its a waste of tax payers money and think that someone who really needs it should be able to go) so they said they have some where i can take my children, but my kids weren't born addicted, and ive been clean for so long to me its not needed and its more important to give those spots to parents in jail or pregnant or fighting for custody that really need it, plus my childrens addy wouldn't be able to see his children while we were there due to he can't drive and he works so he can't care for them himself, this is a delicate situation and i know i can't go to my assessment with an attitude mad cause they even sent me there, and i don't want to tell them i think its a complete waste of time for inpatient rehab because that would most likely send up a big red flag oh shes in denial which is honestly not the case at all. i am well aware of my current status i just hate lying, and my family has a bad history and i don't want that to auto fail me, i know you can't tech fail but i mean a bad score, im so confused. :(
DeleteWhile these are in part true, what I will say is that a good assessor can see through a lie and a good assessor will also know if you need intensive treatment. I say this as I have sat on both sides of the table. When I got a DUI I was told by the person who assessed me he knew I didn't have an alcohol problem and that it was simply that I drank too much and drove. What most times is not understood is that the fact you got a DUI, the fact you got an MIP you are going to get ordered to treatment in most states. Drug addict of kid who was holding for someone else you got caught and most jurisdictions say that means you get treatment.
DeleteReal dilemma here. (Please ignore the upcoming diatribe if of differing opinions, and skip to next paragraph) 17 Yrs ago I was a full fledged druggie. Entered a prestigious program, relapsed with my graduating group in a hotel room first night, and la dee da.. . . anyway, I've got a master's in Clinical Psych, which works against me as the "patient". Through years of research and statistical analysis, I have concluded that addiction/alcoholism is NOT a disease. Period. It's a symptom. If I went to my doc with one of my REAL diseases, such as Crohn's, Barrett's, and many others (none of which are drug or alcohol related), and he told me to go to a support group for 90 days, and do the 12 steps (which I AM a fan of btw) - I'd be a very wealthy man indeed. The AA/NA attendance is the "plan" for all addicts (they don't even have to do the steps!!), and which has less than a 6% success rate from even the Betty Ford Clinic - in other words, find god (higher power, even a tea cup - DUH - the whole BASIS of the steps is to have a HIGHER FORM OF CONSCIOUSNESS INTERVENE PERSONALLY IN ONE'S LIFE AND THUS CHANGE YOU AND MAKE YOU ALL WELL - obviously a tea cup don't cut it), addiction tx has a LOWER "cure" rate than the most aggressive of cancers, HEY WAKE UP!!! IT DON'T WORK. Find out why you drink or drug - THEN you can be cured.
DeleteANYWHOO.. . I haven't drank or drugged for 12 years. 2 years ago I caught my fiance with a crack pipe (actually the police found 5 of them on her, wound up arresting her, charges dropped on me), I laid down the rules, she broke them, and I had to kick her out of my condo. It broke my heart. I got her committed 3x for psych and dual diagnosis reasons, her family NO help, we got back together, all was well, she was clean for 6 months, we scheduled the wedding, picked a house out, and I woke up to find her dead. Not an OD. Bad undiagnosed heart condition. 40 yrs old. I had a bunch of her personal stuff that I thought her kids and fam might want, and carried them in her little purse within my backpack, and wa-la - the police bust into a buddy's hotel room (by mistake), ask whose backpack that was, I said mine, and upon going through it found an inside pouch in her purse that had a broken crack pipe in it. I get charged with possession of paraphanalia. I need to get a drug and alcohol eval but am terrified due to my far away past, and the fact that if you go to a barber you'll be told you need a haircut. An anger mgt specialist? U need anger mgt. A doc, u need meds. Get me? What should I do? I'm disabled, but am considering a complete psycho social so they wouldn't know what I was there for. Any ideas? Or where i can get an eval cheap in md?
If you think giving yourself up to a metaphysical being, saying you are helpless to help yourself and rely on what is essentially an imaginary security camera in the sky watching you, then you're never going to realize it was you the whole time keeping you clean and be prone to relapse. That's why AA/NA has such a high failure rate; trust in God isn't going to stop the cravings.
DeleteI don't believe any of what this counselor claims. In most cases these people are sent by the state for these evaluations and I believe that they state makes a percentage for all of the people that are sent to these courses. I have NEVER met anyone who went for an alcohol evaluation that was state ordered that didn't come out with a determination of less than a level II. This usually costs that person about $800.00 for the counseling and that they are required to take. Then they have to go for what is known as a victim impact panel that costs another $200.00. The state is making money off of this and it feeds into the revenue that DUI arrests bring in. I have known people that only drink on special occasions and only drink one or two drinks at a party that have been pulled over and had to go through this. In Colorado they have what is called DUS, (driving under the suspicion of alcohol), that have had to go through these courses. So DON'T even being to tell me that the state gains nothing from these evaluations; or these counseling sessions. Do I think that driving under the influence is right? No. But there are circumstances where a person is totally functional but a BAC test said differently. There are those that were only half of the legal limit and were required to do these session. I would like to think that what this counselor says is true. But from all of the things I've seen; he simply isn't presenting the whole picture. And as far as reading character goes; nobody can state with 100% accuracy that they can tell is someone is telling the truth or not. NOBODY!
DeleteWell have any of you even thought that there mite be an independent evaluater that has no ties to the state of to a rehab and criminal lawyer s seek them out I guess none of you have had a paid lawyer before and if you did then you got ripped off see DUI plane and simple you did a no no and now you pay $5,000 to the state or paid lawyer and little to the state in court fees
Deletewhite trash - Do you even know what you are talking about? You cannot use an evaluator that does not have ties to the state! At least not here in Illinois. What do you mean about not having paid a lawyer? My lawyer fees were $200. My court fees $3000, and the counseling - Probably around a grand when it is all done.
DeleteNot in Ohio either. The assessor submits their findings to the court, and the court determines what will be required from you. And I don't think it's the state making money off DUIs, it's the industry that has sprung up around the alcohol and drug crackdown, offering services like counseling...) At my court-ordered weekend Drivers Intervention Program, held by a private for-profit firm at a private for-profit hotel, the assessor said I was not required to have any counseling, but they thought it would be a good idea, totally optional. As has been said in this forum before, sure, counseling doesn't hurt anyone. But the court here forces you to follow all recommendations from the assessment team, whether that assessor thinks it should be mandatory or optional, so... here I go for another AOD assessment. I am 55 years old, have 3 successful children and a full-time professional career. I have never tried any drug harder than pot, and that was 40 years ago and I hated it and never tried it again. This DUI was deserved, but is my only contact with the legal system at all, in nearly 40 years of driving and 55 years of living. No accidents, no disorderly conducts, nothing. I had too many glasses of wine, too fast without enough food, at a company Christmas party, and it has cost me many thousands of dollars and tons of aggravation. Sure, driving impaired is not acceptable, but surely the system has people in greater need of help than me...?
DeleteCurrently going through this crap now. Never had a dui in my life. Got charged with an ovi and now they are requiring at least 6 months intensive outpatient all because I had a glass of wine and admitted it. They called it a relapse. Never had anything other. Just time consuming and crazy.
Deleteshould i lie and tell them i failed for weed when i really failed my job pre employment drug test for cocaine? or does the substance really matter my friend said lie and say its for weed since i live in washington and weed is now legal
ReplyDeleteI have a substance abuse assessment because I got charged with possession of marijuana. I got a dwi two years ago, and it does not show up on the public website that almost all employers use to do criminal background checks. Is there any way the person doing my evaluation will have the info for my dwi, or is it safer to not mention it if they ask if I have gotten into any other trouble over substances?
ReplyDeleteAgree 100% with the poster. I got a DUI over the summer, and I had to do an alcohol evaluation. I can only speak for myself in this case, but my evaluator/counselor read from a sheet of questions that everyone gets asked. I'd have to say that I would not be 100% honest in your answers because, due to their past experiences, they most likely assume that you will be undercutting what you really do. For example, if you say you have 2 drinks/week, they will assume you really have 4-5 and so on. Aim low, and def show up as presentable as possible. It will help earn the benefit of the doubt if you look like a normal member of society You don't need to wear a tux, but a button down, slacks and nice pair of shoes will do just fine. Borrow clothes if you dont own anything like that. They are human too and will make assumptions on initial impressions like any of us would. If you've been arrested for multiple drug violations or DUI's, I'd try to start going to AA meetings (or whatever you think will help with what you were arrested for.) I started it because I genuinely want to stop drinking, but your attendance will show the evaluator and the court that you understand the severity of your actions. They will most likely see you as less of a future threat if you're taking independent actions to make sure it never happens again. Go the extra mile and do more than the average person. You probably wont get a charge dismissed, but the judge will probably be more willing to go easier on you at your sentencing.

ReplyDeleteState Certification
Georgia DUI
Thank u so much for honesty on this subject, its such a nerveracking thing have to go through I had another question tho; do u have any idea what type of drug panel test is typically used and if its common for someone to come into the bathroom with u during the urine test ? I'm just so nervous about something popping up, even tho I should b ok that I would like to use synthetic urine 'synthix urine 5'. I've read that this one is very reliable and it would make me feel more confident in case there are any minute traces of anything (opiates or Suboxone). The test is coming up quickly and not sure if its enough time to be sure. Thanks so much agin, any additional info would be so greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteYes they go in with u during urine. They make you pull your pants down and spin.

ReplyDeleteOkay great thank you again. The last thing I need to know is if they go into the bathroom with you. I'm trying to be clean for the test but just in case I don't have enough time to the clean I'd like to have synthetic urine as a backup. Obviously I won't be able to use that if the person goes into the bathroom with me.did they go into the bathroom when you went?
ReplyDeleteI am also curious if they go into the bathroom with you? I really appreciate any help! Thank you :)
Deletesomeone please respond
DeleteYes, they do. Pee has gotta be warm as well. Get some decent cleanse drink like a 16 Oz "Champ" Flush Detox drink. Stay clean for two days- follow the instructions. Worked for me. This dudes instructions on how to pass the assessment worked like a charm for me as well. I'm def not used to lying on that level- but saved me 1000's of dollars & much trouble. I owe the author big time.

ReplyDeleteman I can't thank you enough for the advice. I had back problems from work and didn't have insurance. A buddy of mine gave me percocet and before I knew it I had withdrawals which lead into taking oxy. other than that I've never had any drug issues before in my life. Just having a hard time taking enough days off from work to get this completely out of my system.I just don't want this one mistake to affect me for the rest of my life. thank you again and good luck on staying clean. Sounds like you're doing a good job.
ReplyDeleteDid they walk into the bathroom with you?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteYeah I think you're right but unfortunately I started doing oxycodone after that. About 30mg/day. That's why I was thinking about trying the synthetic urine like quick fix or sythetix5. I thought about just taking Suboxone but I'm not sure if that will show up either. I'm new at all this. Never did anything but drink beer. If I fail this evaluation that my lawyer got me I'm liking at a year probation. I just really fucked up.
ReplyDeleteIf I have had some outpatient group sessions would this help me during the evaluation? I was planning on bringing the paperwork and showing that I have gone through such classes already. Thanks

ReplyDeleteIve had a DUI some 20 years ago in another state, but did the evaluation and classes in the state that I now live in. Recently,I got another one. Should I admit to the alcohol evaluator of the past situation?

DeleteI want this answer also. And do I admit to prev treatments?
DeleteI'd like to know as well. I have an evaluation coming up in a few weeks. Thank you so much!
DeleteI would if you are asked. They can easily run reports. Everything is public record now.

ReplyDeletewhat ever came of this? I'm curious if I'm not upfront with the counselor if they say on the assessment form sent to dmv that I stated it was my only dwi.
Deletewhen you go to the 72 hour weekend intervention program should you be honest then or will and can that be used against you?

ReplyDeleteIf i failed UAs while going to court for my drug paraphenelia charge will the assessor of my cd evalution know this, and will they know what i said as far as usage is concerned in my PSI (presentencing investigation)?
ReplyDeleteThe post is written in very a good manner and it entails many useful information for me. I appreciated what you have done here. I am always searching for informative information like this. Thanks for sharing with us.you can visit Online Counselling for more update.
ReplyDeleteI have an evaluation coming up in a couple days; 2 years ago after my dad passed away I had major issues with drugs and alcohol because of his death and went to rehab voluntarily as my own decision for a couple months. Ever since I have been in control of my intake until just recently getting a DUI. I'm not sure if the evaluator will have access to the fact that I went to rehab but if so I'm assuming my past will not be good for my score. Do you have any knowledge or advice about my circumstance that might be able to help me out? I'm kind of worried my past is going to end up screwing me over at my evaluation :/
ReplyDeleteExcellent blog post and discussion/comments afterwards. It makes me believe even more that we are all just normal folks who are trying to get by - and occasionally we get in a bit of trouble now and then. Unless you really think you have a problem and want to get help, it is necessary to think strategically in order to deal with a legal system that is increasingly into observing its citizens and labeling them as deviants and/or criminals of some kind. The problem lies with our bloated, irrational state that is hell bent on disciplining us. That is what is so traumatic about this whole DUI experience - it's the feeling of this giant system coming down on you, pressuring you, defining you as something you know you are not...so it can process you and stamp a scarlet letter on you...very disturbing and stressful. So be strong, find a good DUI lawyer, read blogs like this, and think strategically.
ReplyDeleteExcellent comment, I am 47 years old, never had anything more than one speeding ticket, however made the bad decision of having a couple drinks after work with a friend, literally there for 40 minutes, drove home and a woman double stopped in front of me and I rear ended her...the rest is a completely humiliating and degrading experience in which I will be forever labeled and for years paying. Your post made me feel better!
DeleteAnonymous, thank you for your comments. I, too, was pulled over after an off-duty cop called 911 this past January because I was swerving . I am 52 yrs old and NEVER ever had any problems with the law. Unfortunately, I also made a bad choice of driving after having had one too many glasses of wine with some old high school friends. I refused the breathalyzer and was taken to jail. They cuffed me, made me change into the "striped" jail top because my blouse had string/ties on the sleeves (supposedly it was for my protection because I might hang myself in jail). Humiliation was an understatement. I am now having to go through the D&A Eval, DWI Safety Education, DWI Repeat Offenders Program (again, this is my only offense in my entire life), 40hrs of community services, Drug Offender Edu program AND vehicle interlocking device. I have worked at a computer company for the last 23yrs with no problem... What's wrong with this picture...??

ReplyDeleteUnless you have had an evaluation,UA,previous inpatient/outpatient services at the same company as your current drug and alcohol assessment , they will not be able to determine your past, they will only know the charge at hand and what you tell them to be true. Good luck !

DeleteI do forensic addiction evaluations, and have enjoyed skimming my way through your article and comments. Do you guys really think that evaluators are so stupid that we just give you a MAST and go from there, or that we just ask Yes/No questions and go by the answers?
ReplyDeleteI have been doing these since 1999,and you wouldn't believe how many guys got their DUI the FIRST time they drove drunk, OH PUHLEEZE!, or how many people tested + for weed from hot-boxing, NOT POSSIBLE, or tested + for cocaine because they had sex from someone who uses, RIIIIGHT!
Good luck!
Is asking me to come back and take 2 urine tests without having to go to therapy part of the process?
DeleteI love to see writtern just how jaded you've become in your profession as an evaluator.
DeleteIf I walked into your office, citing 25 years of not abusing drugs. When the assessment begun, the questions asked i cannot identify with. How do you answer a yes and no question, or opened ended ones. Based on your reply, you would immediately write me off.

For a drug evaluation, do you have to take a drop?

ReplyDeleteMy problems that I was slipped a mickey by an ex friends before getting pulled over- he thought it would help me to Relax. Of course, this sounds like the biggest excuse in the book. So... I blew a .17 with no idea I had even drank any alcohol that day. I was traveling to Colorado the next morning at 6.a.m. to sell my house, and had not eaten any food and had been surfing, when I came in from the water I Slammed my Powerade, the whole thing. Shortly thereafter I realized I had to get to the pharmacy before 9 p.m. and passed a car on a single lane double yellow- something i never have done before! and a cop behind me!!! I work for an attorney and even he says even though it is the truth i got mickeyed that no one will believe it. I've never evcen had a speeedong ticket in my life let alone any legal trouble or DWI!!! I feel like my life is collapsing around me. help.
ReplyDeleteA good attorney would have been able to get you out of this. I can't believe you work for an attorney given the fact that this is a plausible defense.

ReplyDeleteShould I be able to see replies to other people? I have to ask a ? That has already been asked. Do they go in the bathroom with you during the UA. Pot is not legal where I live, and I could possibly still test positive.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I do think I need help with alcohol dependence, but like stated before, I need mental health treatment. AA isn't gonna work. The one time I got the courage to seek psychiatric help on my own, I was turned away because of the addiction. This assessment might have the potential to get me that help, but if I tell them I thought I'd benefit from a psychiatrist, is that gonna get me a psychiatrist, or will that be the red flag that gets me tossed in intensive OP, or worse?
I missed a court date 5years ago due to putting myself through rehab over an opiate addiction. They made me get a eval. And made whatever follow up care provided a part of my probation. I have zero drug or alcohol chargers on my record and have stayed clean for a little under 4yrs. I got in a domestic dispute and got a probation violation ditched on court and had warrants for 4 years. Two weeks ago I got all warrants quashed and they are now asking me to get another eval even though none of my issues involve drugs or alcohol. I DO NOT want after care nor do I need it but I am a frequent marijuana smoker. I should also mention I live in wa state where marijuana is legal. I quit smoking for 7 days and my eval is a week from today. It will be the only thing in my system but am really torn on what to do? I'm chairlift mechanic and a first responder for injuries in the remote areas. I am extremely responsible and do not struggle with any drug use. Pot is legal here is it going to cause an issue? Please help!
ReplyDeleteI need to get an alcohol assessment to get my license back. I got a DWI 10 years ago but have since been using public transportation in NYC. This was my 3rd DWI, I received them at ages 17, 20 and 25. I have obtained the paper work on my ticket for the DWI in question. If I tell the counselor it is my first and only DW I I'm confident she won't know otherwise (I could be wrong) but what I'm worried about it the actual assessment form sent to DMV. Will it state that I proclaimed it was my only DWI?
ReplyDeleteOn the flip side if I am honest about the DWIs what are the odds of getting my license back and not having to do outpatient?
Thank you for your help.

So, I guess what I'm wondering is how I go about completing the evaluation so I am NOT required to do inpatient treatment or intensive outpatient treatment.

ReplyDeleteMy coworkers "smelled alcohol on me" I was sent for Blood alcohol and urine test. It came back 0.4 which is my companies guidelines for intoxication. I was suspended. I am to attend an substance abuse evaluation and I'm so scared of what this entails. Do they collect your blood and urine again or just questions?
ReplyDeletea 0.4? you mean 0.04? a 0.4 would mean you are dead...
DeleteThank you so much for this Awesome blog, and this Awesome advice!
ReplyDeleteYou are a Blessing!
ReplyDeleteI live in utah and had to take a drug evaluation test. This test is completely bias on the fact that the establishment giving the test is invested in you failing. I was able to pass my test but not without having to go through some of the worst psychological interrogation. Never have I been lied to as much as when dealing with the guy giving this test. There entire job is to screw you up so that you fail the test and have to use their facility for treatment *which is a crap load of money* only by sticking to my guns and keeping my story straight was I able to pass this test. Please note that I did have to take a pee test right on the spot so if you are using please stop now! I recommend that you realize that they will try to make you sound like a crazy person if you are honest about anything and choose answers that make sense to a normal person. Like for example, do you drink? yes, more then others, I am a drunk, I drink less then others and maybe I drink to much. Whats the correct answer? huh!!! well I put I drink less then others and they drilled me for ten minutes on this question. Please note that you just keep saying that you dont do this or that, keep your story straight and don't give them an inch. If you answer anything even remotely yes on any of the answers you will be dealing with a year of expensive treatment for a problem that doesn't exist. Unless you truly have problem with life destroying drugs or drinking I don't recommend even admitting to doing anything ever. My friend said he had a couple of beers on the weekend, BAM!! year in treatment where they control your life. Please know that the system you are now part of is a broken one and that you have to do everything you can to keep yourself away from being stuck in treatment. Treatment doesn't do anything for anyone in most cases and that being normal is having a drink on the weekend or drugs once and awhile. Some of you bible thumpers will disagree with my answer, but if you truly care about your future and moving past your charge I highly suggset you A: don't give them anything past what your charge is, ever! B: Dressing up with a collared shirt and Tie
ReplyDeleteC: Don't get upset or angry when they try to piss you off or get your emotions high.
D: Don't do any drugs! (DUH!!)
and even after answering all their questions and peeing clean this prick still is making me take six months of random drug tests. They are ass holes who don't give a shit about anyone but their bank accounts. On all the questions answer that you don't do anything and keep your story straight. Make sure that you don't answer true to questions like: Do you think people lie to get what they want. This is a trick question and they use these answers to brow beat you into saying something wrong.
Hi Steven, great advice and hope all is well. I have a DUI from 19 years ago which I went to classes for. I was arrested 3 months ago for stopping my senior mother from dialing 911. We both had been drinking, it was not physical, she was being irrational and in a state of dementia. This was just her freaking out. Two weeks in jail for me! Like wtf? So I'm ordered to do a D&A for court. DUI and this incident both Illinois, DO I ADMIT MY DUI TO EVALUATOR?
DeleteThank you for this information. This is the best info that I have come across. I feel that now I can stop looking for any other answers and go to sleep. Thank you much
DeleteThis is great advice, thank you. I had no idea that there were so many little tips to passing the alcohol evaluation. However, wouldn't it be helpful to have good counselors before you even had to worry about taking the test? I don't really know. Would you have any advice on finding good DUI counselors? http://www.duiillinois.com
ReplyDeleteHere is my advice: THERE ARE NO GOOD DUI COUNSELORS!!
DeleteI know this from experience - hurtful, anxiety producing experience with the following types of people you will be certain to meet during your court mandated counseling:
The evaluator: I actually liked the personality of my evaluator, but my naivite made me let my guard down, not knowing just how corrupt the evaluation process is (as stated above) They are there to interrogate you, and make you get enough points against you so that they can make as much money on you by getting you to slip up. Think about it: What kind of person would choose to do a job like that?
Then there are the supervisors - these are the ones who don't do the counseling, but deal with the money and whatever else. Both of the women I had to deal with were so angry at their own lives. They know they have you by the balls so anything you say that they don't like - will offend them. Their skin is so thin - and they seem to have a vendetta against the very clients that (LOL) they are supposed to be helping.
The Counselors - All of them have gone thru "The Program." I know that for them the program was a necessary one in their lives - because before they got their certification as a DUI Counselor they were required to get their GED!!!! The first boy that I encountered had NO IDEA about the drug information he was reading straight from the sheet of paper to us. the second counselor had many of her teeth mising - and was equally as uneducated, and unprepared for the educatgion they were supposted to be teaching us. The third counselor was although equipped with presentation and facilitation skills - a jag bag who responded to questions, and sometimes painful subjects with only sarcasm and a haughty, arrogance not quite fitting for someone in the - Counseling Profession.
Hey there, Silas KNight - I clicked on the link you provided and from their website I can say that they already offer many more things than the places I went to did. Acepting insurance. Sliding scale. Pictures of people who look like they care! I say go for them!
DeleteI've been looking for this for a few weeks. I know most of what you advised. If i get a really good score will the possibility that i won't be recommended for rehab.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI am actually going in today at 230 for my assessment. My ex wife claims I have issues with pain meds just because I have to take them for a chronic back issue. She has also said Im a full blown alcoholic and pot smoker. The coutrty ordered me to do weekly UA's for 90 days. So far the first 2 test have only shown my script which is what all the rest will show. As far as myself goes. I can honestly say that I do not drink at all. I haven't in over 6 years and thats not because I had a problem but simply because I figured if I was going to have to take meds then I don't want to poison myself further. I do not take or do any other drugs at all. So the bottom line is... I get meds prescribed to me by a pain doctor I have seen for 7 years. I have a clean record (no dui's or anything) My pain doctor has me do 4 UA's per year plus pill counts in order to see her. Obviously my tolerances have gone up over the years but I am very responsible about taking them. I'm kjust naturally concerned. I don't trust the court system anymore. Any suggestions?
Brad
I had first DUI, but i had a kid in my car, it's considered the second DUI. I finished the DUI class, but i failed for clinical evaluation. Actually, i didn't drink often, i just made bad choice. Do i need going to the other clinical evaluation? Please give good advice. Thanks

DeleteWhere can I go get a evaluation in the Los Angeles area & how much?
ReplyDeleteI had to go for an evaluation this week ordered by my employer through our EAP. I had to completed two questionnaires at the evaluation (1 - 50 questions & 1 - 350 questions). I go back next week to get the results. Two years ago I stupidly took a few pain pills from co-worker (not at work) due to a neck injury which I ended up having to have surgery on a month later. This was never sent to HR. We had a talk at work which I accepted what I did and that it was extremely wrong and feel horrible for. That is as far as it went. Now two years later a different co-worker and I were working together at her home on the weekend. We had that I remember 3 strong drinks that tasted like chocolate milk but were all alcohol. I ended up blacking out making an ass of myself supposedly. I was mortified because I might drink 1-2 beers or wine four times a year. I had not eaten anything that day and had been working very long hours. Blacking out scared the crap out of me and I haven't drank since. I thought we had talked it thorough and everything was ok. Three months later after this happened and when we started butting heads at work regarding work issues. I had several talks with my manager about the issues I were having and how to handle them with her. Once she found out about that she went to HR and told them about me blacking out at her house and the incident from 2 years ago when I was in a completely different department. She has a good friend in that department and heard through gossip about it through. Has anyone been through anything like this? I don't want to lose my job or have to do some insane treatment program.
ReplyDeleteI've gone thru three of these already, no matter how good you are at lying they give you a mandatory amount of classes of 20hrs (10 if you're under 21.) The system doesn't work; the classes are a joke it's all just a waste of time and money. I'm about to go for a 4th one; I swear the whole system is redundant- pay tons of money and time for a proven failure system to dismiss your charge which is already on every employers BGC now or go to jail and get something on your record anyways...
ReplyDeleteReason I bring this up is I've just had no motivation to do this crap again, I could get a "dismissal" charge if I do the SAA and the classes or go to jail for this. The Thing that pissed me off is I voluntarily just did and finished the classes before the situation I'm in got me another one of these ultimatums, So being frustrated with this I am about to just let this one go and give up, the court finally won, gg.
do they drug test you the first time you go in? i go monday and im freaking out

ReplyDeleteTook the test scored 18 minimal risk, translates to “recommended” 10 hrs, that doesn’t mean the judge won’t sentence you to more. Google Mortimer Filkins evaluation assessment test it gives questions and how they are scored. Stick to the Authors advice, go in like a nun. I saw ppl erasing and thinking way to hard on this. Keep a thought in ur head as to how your grandmother would answer or a virgin. My lawyer said they don't know you from Adam, don't give them info they don't need to know. I am in cook county they do a urine test. There is a formula they use to calculate weight, height, hrs you drank = ur BAC. The interview portion lasted about 3 minutes. I agree with the others saying it’s a MONEY PIT and if you don’t have the $ its even worse best of luck
ReplyDeleteThanks for the sound advice

I took the test for my first time i have only drank one time had a bad experience and got abducted and have people arresting out of vehicle and within the hospital for a whole day and got a rape kit on me and then everyone one against me saying there was drinking and driving and that was the first and last time I'll ever drink all the questions were confusing because they don't reply to me I didn't know how to answer them my life is fine I don't do drugs I'm against alcohol completely and I never got arrested for this I just got charged for an OWI and they never investigated my situation I'm being a victim
ReplyDeleteand I'm still to this day never been pulled over for anything never got pulled over for my ant and I have no criminal record and no points on my license I'm a good girl my mom raised me right
ReplyDeleteThis post is outrageous! Ha, I encourage anyone reading to dismiss everything this author has written. Virtually every "statement" made is erroneous, most significantly, we contact collateral sources, we're privy to the notion that the client may fib. So, take these recommendations, , waste your time studying them,, at the end of the day a well trained, experienced,,and thorough evaluator will make recommendations based on empirical studies and evidence based strategies.
ReplyDelete🙄 Dawn, B.S., LADC
The evaluators are not able to call you a liar if you're consistent in your answers. The original author is spot on. DO NOT TELL THE TRUTH AT ONE OF THESE EVALUATIONS. Only tell them what you know for a fact they are able to confirm, and make sure your friends and family know not to take any calls from them. I was "evaluated" at the end of my DUI sentence and didn't even realize that telling the truth about my totally normal and moderate drinking was going to result in me having to lose my job in order to be able to attend excessive treatment and AA meetings with junkies, go into debt, and lose my license due to my inability to pay for the outrageous $100 a week fees they asked for.
DeleteI lived in a part of town in which you could not get around without a car. There was no public transit. I had no choice but to drive on a suspended license to find a job and work, and I got 2 misdemeanor convictions as a result. The state of FL would not issue a hardship license on account of the evaluation and I had to work to pay rent and feed myself. I was basically living the lifestyle of a person on the run from the law, because I knew that my next encounter with police while driving would send me to prison for up to 5 years and make me a felon. But I had to take that risk to avoid homelessness! In the end, a friend of mine came to my rescue and helped me move to a big city in another state where there was ample public transportation.
Don't listen to people like Dawn. They're just part of a system designed to bleed you dry and encourage you to end up back in jail.
One of the other supposed-professionals who replied to this admitted he was a hardcore junkie for years. How the fuck is someone like that trusted to be in any kind of medical process.
UPDATE- i plead to DUI, received 6 months of SUPERVISION and a minimal fine. Again listen to the author- take the test with thoughts that you are a NUN, and have ABSOLUTELY NO problems and that your family has NO problems. My lawyer told me to take the 10 hrs of minimum before I went to court i was able to find a class and go, the judge loved the proactive approach. The system is a MONEY PIT - Search for MORTIMER Filkins evaluation online it will give some test questions. PREPARE yourself otherwise it will be a long and costly process- (DAWN - The well trained DONT CARE, they see 40 or more ppl a day, its their JOB, not their passion and they like to be employed by the state and receive a pay check)
ReplyDeleteDo they urine test you at the alcohol evaluation?
ReplyDeleteThey do in my state! (MN)
DeleteIf you were referred by court there is no way to pass this test. Lady said," We'll they referred you here. So I have to do something." The paper they had me sign to start group had one option. Two classes a week for 8 weeks. Definitely all about money. They could give a fuck about you or your problems.

DeleteIf your UA is bs and you to then it is. Will not help you. Definitely don't do
ReplyDeleteWhat i did and go off on tangent about this is all a racket to get more money before they sentence you guilty.
When you said don't admit that you can drink alot more than the average person because obviously it's gonna look bad.. would me saying that effect my actual case, because I was thinking about trying to use that argument if I had to in my trial cause I honestly can and I wasn't even close to drunk when my blood test said 0.12
ReplyDeleteThat's a terrible idea. Never admit you can drink more than the average person. They will punish you for it.

ReplyDeleteDo you have to say why you want the evaluation?

DeleteI really need some help.... I already took my assessment and paid for it. I feel that these people are con artists I am so afraid of turning in my paperwork to my probation officer with this counselors recommendations on it for DUI school bc the extent of the treatment and programs she requires for me to attend and complete before getting my license back (DUI for someone in my vehicle having an open container and a very small amount of drugs on them none of which belonged to me and I was not aware of the misconduct in my vehicle unfortunately) is insane and virtually impossible considering the fact I already have to attend NA meetings twice a week and drug and alcohol counseling two counties away once a week (($110 for every visit to my counselor)) and not to mention they require now that I attend an outpatient rehabilitation program as well and I am working a full time job and expecting my first child in January... I will never be able to afford all of these various unnecessary expenses or even have the time to attend all of these classes programs and schooling along side the work hours that I am honestly blessed to have right now and the doctor visits with my OBGYN... Ahhhh...... Life. And Of course my treatment plan I already follow with my counselor I mentioned before. I am so overwhelmed and always upset thinking they have set me up to fail and that no one in this entire situation actually cares about my well being or if I continue my recovery that I have been so successful with on my own for almost a year now. It's frightening to think that I was doing so well on my own and that the system and my legal troubles has put more stress and depression in to my life then the reason I chose to use drugs in the first place years ago... I want to do whatever is healthiest for my unborn child and myself. I don't want to look back on my first pregnancy and remember all of this heartache but I understand have to pay for my consequences. I just need someone to help me out and let me know if it's possible to make this easier for me somehow. I am a soon to be a single mother on state provided medical care. A drug addict in recovery. I have strong passion for a nursing career in addiction and mental health type facilities. I won't let these people blow my fire out. Someone have information that could help me???

ReplyDeleteIf u take prescriptions like adderall...watch out. I have been prescribed for 8 years and now this lady has me being reevaluated to make sure I am not a victim of the amphetamine epidemic.
ReplyDeleteI am already reevaluated every 3 months by my doc. She wants me to see a psych to be reevaluated. Only hope... the judge may desagree or go against her recomendation.
She said, “You tested dirty for methamphetamines. Are you prescribed prescription drugs?”
Bottom line, you do not drink with certain prescriptions such as stimulants.
Hi i have a drug assessment to do
ReplyDeletebefore the month is over but the only problem is it is a family service reason, i have people who were bitter and jeolous
Sorry i publisher but was not finished. Lime i was saying i had an ex-wife jealous of my boyfriend and i living at her ex-husbands house she thought that if she called family services on me it would get us out the house so she could move bck in.., well it worked we got kicked out because i was bring to much attention to the house and his ex called.. so messed up anyways she told family services that i speak really fast and that there is excessive drug use specifically meth. They came and talked to me an requested that i take a drug test. I agreed knowing i woukd be dirty. I am a gret mother but i do like to do my thing thats absolutely far away from my child. I never let any thing come before my child and i never choose that over my family. But im nervous about the assessment because if i pass than my case will be closed. The worker sees my home and my family as a positive home and safe but i need a professional opinion. Ive been through the assessment before but failed so i know kinda of what i have but do u have any thing u can help me with please. Ty for your time. I really appreciate it. Katt
ReplyDeleteAfter being in relationship with him for seven years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should rather contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that never believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I mailed the spell caster, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem and who is different from all the fake ones out there. ReplyDeleteTHank you for this I just finish a second assessment and it looks like I will not have to go thru all those expensive out patient stuff! Thank you
ReplyDelete(Posting for a friend), going into this today and he says this is very helpful! Will comment how it goes-
ReplyDeleteTo be honest this helped so much, but I played the part of the "nun" and my assessor definitely caught on to that. A lot of the questions were strongly worded and I felt I had to answer in the 'better' light of extremities. My assessor was kind enough to explain certain questions though he felt I didn't answer to my most accurate and honest choice. I can see why some people may be diagnosed wrongly. Overall though thank you for the post and explanation!
DeleteJust got my 2nd dui in March after drinking all day and into the night. 1st was 9 years ago. My rival is scheduled this month. Any advice would be helpful.
ReplyDeleteI wish I would have seen this before my assessment. I answered honestly and failed. Never been in trouble before an accident on my property. I will be getting a second opinion and am wondering if they can see my previous answers. I think my mistake was saying I never get hangovers. The person that did my assessment did call me out on a couple things also just an FYI.

ReplyDeleteWell for me, beating drug and alcohol assessments out here in Utah and anywhere in the country can be done so in one way only. Just being sober. The kits from https://ampprobation.com/services/assessments/ are really accurate now so if you want to beat it some other way, I don't think you will succeed. Take it from me, I've been there.
